My name is Claudia, and this blog is part of an assessment for my uni
course 'new communication technologies'. I am studying communications, majoring
in public relations, as I wish to work in the fashion or entertainment industry
but am not very creative. The point of this blog is to write about each weeks
reading and lecture.
Week One:
Reading: Questions about the usefulness of microcomputers in 1980s
Australia - Melanie Swalwell
In the 1980’s, computers were a new concept to majority of
the population, being questioned for their cost and usefulness. The article
‘questions about the usefulness of microcomputers in 1980s Australia’
investigates the launch of microcomputers in Australia, and compared that to
technology being used in today’s world. In the 1980s, many people were
skeptical if such a device was needed or would even be beneficial to society.
Throughout a decade, new software systems and technological advances were made,
in turn changing the view towards computers to be positive. In todays society,
almost everyone has a desktop or a laptop computer, and crucially depend on
them for many daily tasks, both work and personal related, and many people
would be lost without them
Lecture: Are we communication?
The lecture this week was focused on the question ‘Are we communication?’
Communication has become a very important part of todays society, and is
involved in many different career fields under ‘the flourishing of disciplines’.
Communication can be both verbal and non-verbal, going hand in hand with human
language. It is a way to translate information from one person to another, and
can be done face-to-face, over the phone, through media outlets (tv, radio)
etc. All living things have the ability to communicate to each other, using
noises or motions to get a message to each other. It is an innate feature that
we use in all aspects of our life.
